What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme?

Australians with disabilities now have access to new support services through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The NDIS gives customers choice and control over their experience, in contrast to earlier programmes that were standardised and offered few individually tailored services. You can select your own NDIS provider and develop a person-centered plan for the resources and support you require under the new system.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is in charge of overseeing and carrying out the NDIS. To implement the NDIS reform, the agency was established in 2013. Currently, the NDIA is in charge of deciding which services can be supported, establishing eligibility requirements, and deciding if an applicant is eligible.

But at the local level, local partners manage the NDIS. Services for eligible Australians with disabilities are coordinated and managed by two different types of local partners. After the National Disability Insurance Scheme has deemed you eligible, you must choose how to handle your assistance monies. You can get funds from the National Disability Insurance Scheme, or NDIS, to pay for disability-related support services. NDIS funds must be properly controlled, though, because there are limitations on how it can be used. We created this in-depth NDIS self-management handbook for that reason.
